Frequently Asked Questions About Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on approach that focuses on balancing the nervous system. When the nervous system is balanced, all other systems can function more optimally, allowing the body to rest, recharge, and heal. As a practitioner, I often receive questions from clients about the best practices for maximizing the benefits of CST.

Here are three common questions I’ve encountered.

1. What is the most important recommendation for maintaining benefits between craniosacral therapy visits?

My top recommendation for maintaining the benefits of craniosacral therapy is breathwork. This practice is not only easy and free, but it's also portable and provides quick results. By simply exhaling for twice as long as you inhale, you can help shift your body from a sympathetic “fight or flight” state to a more relaxed parasympathetic “rest and digest” state.

Breathwork does wonders for your nervous system, allowing the membranes surrounding it to relax, which keeps the system flexible and healthy.

To get started:

* Inhale for a count of 3

* Exhale for a count of 6

* For 5-10 breaths

This technique can be incredibly beneficial throughout your day, especially when you're feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or out of sorts.

Consider incorporating this practice into your daily routine—perhaps right after you brush your teeth—as a way to ground yourself and promote relaxation. For additional techniques to help you regain your balance and inner calm, be sure to check out my "Regain Your Inner Calm" workbook.

2. Can I incorporate craniosacral therapy into my wellness routine, or do I need to be experiencing an injury, illness, or stress to benefit from it?

Absolutely! Craniosacral therapy is not just for those experiencing injury, illness, or stress. It can be a valuable addition to anyone's wellness routine. Many clients choose to receive CST regularly as a preventive measure or to enhance their overall well-being.

CST can help:

- Reduce tension and stress

- Improve mental clarity and emotional balance

- Enhance relaxation and promote better sleep

- Support the body’s natural healing processes

Incorporating craniosacral therapy into your wellness routine can contribute to a greater sense of health and vitality, even when you’re not experiencing specific issues. Many of my clients come in monthly to help them rebalance and stay on track with their health goals.

3. Can I use craniosacral therapy alongside other forms of treatment?

Yes, craniosacral therapy can complement various other forms of treatment. Many clients find it beneficial to integrate CST with therapies such as physical therapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture, massage therapy, or mental health therapies.

CST is a gentle and non-invasive treatment that often works harmoniously with other modalities. However, it’s essential to communicate with your healthcare providers about all the treatments you are receiving. This ensures a coordinated approach to your care and helps maximize the benefits of each therapy.
